While working on a major contract at the Sky head office in Osterley, Bourne visited a local Scout Group to teach children about the dangers of playing on and near building sites.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), each year several children die and many are injured following accidents on construction sites.
Karen McDonnell, Occupational Health and Safety Policy Adviser at RoSPA, said: “Although the number of children killed and injured at construction sites has gone down in recent years, there are still two or three children who are killed after gaining access to building sites every year, which is unacceptable.”
During the visit, Bourne Project Director Greg Brown launched a competition for the 1st Osterley Scouts to design their own site safety posters and build a model multi-storey car park.
Greg says “It’s important to get youngsters thinking about the dangers that exist to emphasise the message they should stay away from building sites. We have a responsibility not only to make sure children can’t access our sites but also to educate them why they shouldn’t even attempt it.”
Greg and Design Manager Brian Bradshaw returned to the Scout Group earlier this month to judge the competition entries and present prizes to the winning designers, Molly Ballantyne, age 10 and Daniel Lumm Age 9. Molly and Daniel’s winning safety posters will be displayed on Bourne construction sites across the country.
