The refurbishment of the iconic 45-storey Citi Tower in Canary Wharf will create a stunning workplace for the future, incorporating the latest technology and the highest standards of environmental design. Bourne were successful in the creation of a new modern working experience at Citi Tower, with 3,750 tonnes of steel distributed over 45 floors. Having no tower crane and only a 3-tonne capacity, 3.0m service lift to vertically lift the steel, the steelwork installation was a challenge.

A new feature above floor 39, to extending the floor plates, had to be installed with 20.0m long beams weighing 20 tonnes each. The beams had to be taken up in 3.0m sections and then fully buttwelded back up on each floor level. Mid the height of the structure, a new double storey atrium was created involving the strengthening of existing steelwork and their connections to accommodate the extra loads now applied to the structure.

New larger and more spacious voids had to be formed to accommodate new sweeping staircases throughout the structure. At the lower levels major refurbishments works were undertaken with new steelwork introduced to create an open working environment.
